It is the number of athletes selected into the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) programme for the 2026-28 cycle. Alongside it is 36, the total scale of the two-year intake, higher than at any previous point. This is infrastructure news, not match news. There are no wins, no strokes, no rankings. But for an analyst, it is a signal that is easy to miss because it has no highlight reel. It sits in office corridors, in funding allocations, and in meetings between SGS College, SportsAid and the national governing body. DiSE is not a typical table tennis academy. It is a qualification that combines high-performance sport training with academic study. The syllabus includes anti-doping, nutrition, lifestyle, and values and behaviours. It is a dual-career model, not a technical periodisation camp. The announcement names four athletes: Bly Twomey, Abraham Sellado, Kacper Piwowar and Adam Alibhai. Twomey is a Paralympic medallist, which places her in the para classification system, a separate competitive structure from able-bodied table tennis. The other three represented England at the European Youth Championships. These are two distinct profiles sharing one cohort. The programme structure includes 5 camps per year, one international camp, potential international competition in year two, and qualifications as a coaching assistant and in first aid. SportsAid administers the programme on behalf of Sport England, with SGS College as the academic provider. The headline fact is a record intake: 18 new athletes, bringing the total to 36. This follows an earlier increase from 15 to 18 places. The expansion is real. But the announcement does not include conversion data. It shows more places, not more elite results.
