MOJI Officially Launches 2026 University Volleyball League: 36 Teams, 24 Universities, 3 Cities

On October 7, 2026, GOR UII in Yogyakarta will host the opening matches of Liga Voli Mahasiswa 2026 – the first university volleyball league organized by Indonesian sports platform MOJI. The official announcement came in late September 2026, after the draw was held on September 25, 2026. The debut edition features 36 teams from 24 universities, competing in three cities, with 60 matches across 15 days. The competition is divided equally: 18 men’s teams and 18 women’s teams. This gender balance is a positive signal for Southeast Asian volleyball. The participating universities are spread across Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Jakarta. Yogyakarta opens the tournament at GOR UII, Surabaya hosts matches at GOR Unesa, and Jakarta plays at GOR Pertamina Simprug. Each city hosts six men’s teams and six women’s teams, split into two pools of three. Each city cluster plays 20 matches over five days, producing 60 matches in total. The schedule runs from October 7 to October 31, 2026. Jakarta matches start at 11:00 WIB, while the other two cities start at 13:00 WIB, suggesting operational constraints at the Jakarta venue. The prize structure is described as “uang pembinaan,” or development grants. In each gender category, the champion receives Rp10 million, the runner-up Rp7.5 million, third place Rp5 million, and fourth place Rp2.5 million. The total per gender is Rp25 million, roughly USD 1,550. This confirms the event is positioned as a grassroots development competition, not a high-stakes professional tournament. The most significant feature is the media-owner model. MOJI is not merely broadcasting an existing event; it is organizing and owning the competition. VIDIO, a major Indonesian OTT platform, will stream the matches. This creates a closed value chain: producing content, owning the event, and distributing it to audiences. This model is still rare in Southeast Asian volleyball. Banardi Rachmad, MOJI’s Deputy Director of Programming, said the tournament aims to create a new competitive stage for university students and to bring young volleyball talents onto the national stage. The motto “Campus as a new stage” reflects this ambition. Context from Indonesia’s women’s team at the 2026 Asian Games helps explain the strategy. Indonesia finished 6th, beat Vietnam 3-0, but lost to Japan and Chinese Taipei. The national team remains strong in Southeast Asia but below Asia’s top tier. A university league cannot close that gap immediately, but if sustained over several years, it could become a pipeline for Proliga clubs and the national team. This is a structural experiment. The absence of seeding data means competitive balance cannot be assessed. The main risks are sustainability and unclear coordination with PBVSI, Indonesia’s volleyball federation. The biggest question is whether LVM 2027 will be announced. If it is, the league can be seen as a real foundation; if not, it will remain a one-off event. Looking ahead, the key signals are: a 2027 edition, VIDIO viewership numbers, PBVSI involvement, and whether LVM alumni appear in Proliga or the national team within three to five years. That will be the real measure of a “national stage” university league.
